Black Aristocrats of Nature: 10 Incredible Melanistic Animals

What is a melanistic animal?

In nature, melanistic animals are rare, but they have a number of advantages in comparison with their conventional counterparts. Most commonly, dark individuals become fitter to survive and reproduce in their environment as they are better camouflaged. This makes some species less conspicuous to predators, while others such as black panthers use it as an advantage during night hunting.

Melanistic (all-black) animals get this color due to excessive amount of melanin in their skin. Melanism is an undue development of dark-colored pigment in the skin (opposite of albinism). It occurs in a variety of animals, including, for example, mammals, reptiles and arthropods.
